Just a reminder about the Piccadilly Gala Ticket Sales Kick-Off Event tonight from 5:30 to 7pm at America’s Community Bank.  This will be an opportunity for you to be the first to get your tickets and plan your seating arrangement with your friends and co-workers.  Tickets are specially priced at $45 each for this one night.  Our theme for our fourth annual event is “Gypsy Prom”, so please join us for this fun and funky  event!

It’s a beautiful day in Downtown Blue Springs!  I just wanted to remind you about the Downtown Alive! Piccadilly Gala ticket sales kickoff event coming up on Monday evening, January 30th from 5:30 to 7pm at America’s Community Bank.  We are really excited about this year’s Piccadilly Gala theme which is “Gypsy Prom” – check out the Gypsy Prom Poster…looks fun!!  We will be serving light refreshments Monday evening for your enjoyment!

2016 Annual Mayor’s Christmas Tree Lighting Ceremony

Good Morning!

 All are invited to the City of Blue Springs’ 2016 Annual Mayor’s Christmas Tree Lighting ceremony this evening, Tuesday, December 6.  This is a free, family holiday event that will begin at 5:30 p.m. and will take place outside City Hall at 903 W. Main Street in downtown Blue Springs.

 “This special event draws hundreds of children and families to downtown Blue Springs for a unique holiday experience,” said Mayor Carson Ross.  “It’s a wonderful tradition in our community and a great way to celebrate the closeness and the spirit of giving that exists within our city.”

Pete Grigsby with KMBC Channel 9 and teacher for the Blue Springs School District, will join Mayor Ross as Master of Ceremonies.  The live countdown to the tree lighting will take place between 6:15 and 6:20 p.m.  Mayor Ross will be joined by Kim Nakahodo’s family as they flip the switch and light the official Blue Springs Christmas Tree.  Santa and Mrs. Claus will arrive in an Enchanted Sleigh immediately following.

 It’s a great event – come join the fun !!

Board of Directors is recruiting for the position of Executive Director.  As you know, Downtown Alive! is growing rapidly and hosting many projects, all of which need devoted time and attention.  Unfortunately, my professional position with the bank is very demanding and at this point, I must relinquish something.  I am very devoted to and passionate about Downtown Alive! and will maintain a position on the board working on special projects.

Holiday Open House – Thursday, November 17, 2016, 5-8 p.m.

Dear Participant,

The Downtown Alive! group is pleased to invite you to the third annual Holiday Open House on Thursday, November 17 from 5-8 p.m. in the historic downtown district of Blue Springs, Missouri.

You are invited to sell your products during this event.

  • There is no fee to participate, but the Downtown Alive! group would appreciate a donation for participation in the event. (You will receive a tax letter for your donation.)
  • Registration begins at 3 pm and will end at 4:30 pm
  • Set up will begin at 3:30 pm on November 17.
  • Set up must be completed by 4:45 pm.
  • Each participant will be assigned a space inside a downtown business.
  • Participants must provide their own tables, chairs, displays, etc.
  • Participants may bring as much product to sell as they wish.
  • Sales tax must be included in all sales.
  • There will be no security provided.
  • There will be no electricity available.

This Holiday Open House is by invitation only. We sincerely hope you will be able to participate in this fun event!

Presentation by Downtown Alive! at the City Council Meeting Tonight

Hello,

There will be a presentation by Downtown Alive! at the City Council meeting tonight.  It would be fantastic to have a full audience  so please try to attend if possible.  The meeting starts at 6:00 pm at the Public Safety Building.  It is very important to show support to the City Council so hope to see you there.  I am told the meeting will be a short one.

Secondly, don’t forget about the Downtown Alive! Social Hour Tuesday night at Pizza Shoppe beginning at 6:30 pm.  We are looking for feedback about Fall Fun Fest to share with the Chamber.  What do you LOVE about Fall Fun Fest?  What do you think could be improved upon?  Would you like to speak with Chamber staff in a more detailed conversation?  We don’t have plans for an open discussion, just an opportunity for each of you to jot down you notes in one place that can be passed on to the Chamber.

Update from Downtown Alive!

Dear Friends,                                                                                                                          August, 2016

We recently held a Town Hall meeting to share our progress with the stakeholders and citizens, and solicit input for our next steps and future direction.  If you were able to attend that meeting, thank you for your time and comments.

The last few years were very successful for Downtown Alive!  With your help, we were able to continue to improve the quality of downtown in the following ways:

  • Several new businesses were welcomed to the district creating new jobs and opportunities.
  • The beautification efforts continued with the addition of new benches, waste receptacles and custom made bicycle racks, fabricated and donated by The Bike Stop.
  • Two new pieces of art were added to the Downtown landscape through the “Remnants Restored” Public Art Project in partnership with the Public Art Commission.
  • A new brochure entitled “Doing Business in Downtown Blue Springs” was created in cooperation with the City, which highlights the incentive tools available for renovations and improvements.
  • With input from Downtown Alive! and the Historic Preservation Commission, the City created three “Downtown Conservation Areas” to help preserve the historic character of our City.
  • Our efforts were recognized by the Missouri Main Street Connection. They raised our status from Affiliate to Associate Level, an elevation that normally takes at least 8 years, completed in 4!

There are many tasks from our Action Plans either completed or in the process of being completed in 2016:

  • Continue the beautification efforts by adding more benches and bicycle racks in Central Park.
  • Installation of four murals designed and created by artists in the Blue Springs High Schools, to showcase our history and heritage. The murals were mounted on buildings within the district, and the project was partially funded with a grant from Truman Heartland Community Foundation.
  • We received the “Creating Creative Places” Award for the “Remnants Restored” Public Art Project during the Annual Missouri Main Street Connection Evening of Excellence in July 2016.
  • Continue to promote and educate the business and property owners about the various funding opportunities available for façade and building improvements.

Some of the goals discussed at the Town Hall meeting for 2017 and the future include:

  • Establishing a Community Improvement District to provide a steady funding source.
  • Attracting more retail to the district (Destination Business).
  • Creating outdoor (green) gathering and meeting spaces.

We need the help of our “Friends of Downtown Alive!” to continue this progress.  Please renew your Friend status for 2016 with a tax deductible contribution.  Your donations can be mailed, made on our website by clicking on the “Donate” button on our homepage, or even better, bring them to our monthly “Friends” meeting and see what’s going on.  The next Friends Social Hour is September 20th from 6:30 to 7:30 pm at Pizza Shoppe.  We need you and your time!  Please consider volunteering for one of the four teams or perhaps helping with a specific event.  Take a look at our website for more information.
